2010 Census
The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census count will determine the distribution of more than $400 billion in state and federal funds for things like hospitals, health care, schools and emergency services. Even with an exploding population, California could lose a Congressional state if hard-to-count populations are excluded from the final count. Immigrants, particularly low-income immigrants of color, are particularly at risk of not being counted. MIV will be sharing Census resources throughout the coming months. We encourage you to share your work and resources with MIV to increase communication and effectiveness statewide. Given the minority organizing efforts encouraging immigrants to boycott the Census until federal immigration reform is achieved, it is more important than ever that our communities here from us about the importance of being counted in the 2010 Census!

MIV developed the 2008 Immigrant Voices Platform to identify the issues important to low-income immigrant communities. We want to provide a tool for individuals to use when deciding how to vote. We created this document with input from community members, partner organizations, and allies throughout the state. Low-income immigrants and people of color can use their vote to create positive change in California. Our votes reflect our priorities and values. All people, regardless of immigration status, have a right to quality education, good jobs, health care, public benefits, affordable housing, healthy environments, and human dignity. Our shared values are community, family, health, justice, equality, self-determination and democracy.November 2008
